Leaf Spring Shackle

Leaf Spring Shackle Replacement: Get Them Discounted Online

What is a Leaf Spring Shackle and what does it do?

Leaf springs are vital components of the suspension on trucks and larger SUVs (those built on truck frames, not those built on passenger car frames). These are essentially a series of straight metal “leaves” that help support the rear of the vehicle and work to cushion the ride, as well as helping the wheels to travel. A leaf spring shackle holds each end of the spring assembly to the frame of the truck. They look like a sideways capital letter I, and are held in place by bolts with bushings to protect the bolt from travel wear on the shackle body.

When should I replace my Leaf Spring Shackle?

Your leaf spring shackle is made to withstand serious wear and tear, but they can be damaged, particularly if you do a good deal of off road driving. It’s possible for the bushings to fail, as well as the bolts and even the arms of the shackle to fail given enough time and abuse. If you notice significant wear on the shackle or mounting bolts, or there’s a serious problem with rust, it’s time to invest in a leaf spring shackle replacement.

What happens if I don’t?

If you don’t install a leaf spring shackle replacement and your current shackle fails, your vehicle will not ride correctly (possibly not at all). It’s also possible that the shackle will fail while driving, which could allow the end of the leaf spring to contact the surface of the road, potentially causing an accident. A discount leaf spring shackle replacement will keep this from happening.

How to do it: Replacing your Leaf Spring Shackle

  1. Make sure you have an OEM-fit leaf spring shackle replacement. The type and style varies by make and model.
  2. Put the rear of the vehicle on jack stands so that it is stable.
  3. Remove the mounting bolts from the leaf spring shackle (there will be two per shackle, one holding the shackle to the frame and one holding the leaf spring to the shackle).
  4. Remove the shackle from the vehicle.
  5. Install the new leaf spring shackle replacement.
  6. Insert the bushings before putting in the bolts.
  7. Insert the bolts and attach the leaf spring to the shackle, and then the shackle to the frame.
  8. NOTE: If one shackle is damaged, it’s highly likely that others are (you have at least two per leaf spring). Replace them all at the same time if necessary.

Anything else I need to know?

For some vehicles, you may need to remove some ancillary parts to get to the Leaf Spring Shackle Replacement, so be prepared for that. If you run into problems with that process, you may need to do some research to get instructions that are specific to your vehicle.
